Start with the journey
A digital system is experienced as a sequence of moments: arriving, identifying, requesting, reviewing and moving forward. Designing each moment in isolation can leave the connections between them unresolved. A useful starting point is to map the whole journey, including the handoffs between people and tools.
Make the handoffs visible
When a process crosses a department or a screen, context needs to move with it. Clear states, explicit ownership and understandable next steps help people see where they are and what happens next. Connected systems should make that context easier to follow.
Design for the real environment
Connectivity, device access and operational constraints shape how software is used. A considered digital workflow accounts for interruptions and exceptions as carefully as it accounts for the expected path. The aim is a coherent experience that people can understand and operate.
